Facts about Lifestyle and Slide Presentations

Sleep

  • Problem solving & creativity rockets up 15-35% after REM sleep

  • Sleep deprivation compromises all major physiological systems

Mindfulness

  • Mindfulness is paying attention to the present moment without judgement, including bodily sensations, thoughts, and feelings

Social Connections

Limiting Caffeine, Alcohol, and Screen Time

  • Caffeine consumption has been shown to cause anxiety in people without psychiatric disorders, especially at higher doses (>400mg/day, cup coffee=100 mg)

  • Reducing or eliminating alcohol improves sleep, morning wellness, creativity, memory, relationships, positive outlook, and mood. Also reduces risk of dementia, cancer, stroke, hypertension, heart disease, and liver problems. There are no health benefits to any amount of alcohol.

  • Reducing screen time improves sleep and mood, while reducing stress and allowing for more time to connect with friends and family

Exercise and Diet

  • Being physically active for 30 minutes on all or most days reduces risk of heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, some cancers, and dementia

  • Exercise has been shown to be an effective adjunct in the treatment of depression

  • Healthy eating boosts immunity, strengthens bones, supports muscles, helps digestive function, promotes longevity, and reduces risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and some cancers

Projects and Purpose

  • Sustained engagement in mentally challenging activities has been shown to improve memory in older adults.

  • Engaging in creative activities reduces cortisol levels and can lead to lasting improvement in mood 

  • Having a sense of purpose in life reduces risk of stroke, functional physical limitations, cognitive impairment, and mortality
